Office Machines
CLASnet recommends computers based on our experience with a wide variety of machines which have been used on our network. While every user's needs are different, we've found some common elements which are likely to make a given computer more useful over a longer period.
CLAS recommends either Dell or Gateway business class desktop machines for most office and lab uses. For Macintosh-centric departments we make Apple computer recommendations based on the specific needs of the user. There are online quotes for University computer purchases.
The business class machines, Dell Optiplex or Gateway E-series, are better tested, better integrated, and have a better supply of identical parts available for repair and relacement. There are faster, cheaper, machines available from the home lines of both companies, but those machines have shown themselves to be less productive in the medium and long term.
CLAS does not recommend laptop computers as a primary computing device. We have found that you can get twice a much computing power with a desktop, or spend half as much money for the same computing power. Also, the LCD screens of laptops are fragile, and a replacment screen costs as much as a new computer.
Student Machines
The University of Florida has a computing requirement, but it is neither standardized over the whole university nor specific about the hardware or software. CLAS recommends that students check with their prospective major department about specific needs both for hardware and software. For their general education requirements, almost any Windows-based computer less than two years old will suffice. We do recommend getting the Professional version of Microsoft Windows, rather than a Home version, since it is more reliable and works better on networks.
