Configuring Automatic Updates to Network Associates McAfee Virusscan product

McAfee VirusScan versions 7 and 8
note: Versions of McAfee older than 7.0 are no longer supported by McAfee, and should be upgraded to version 8. Please see http://www.software.ufl.edu/mcafee/index.html to get the latest version of McAfee Antivirus, which is free for UF students, faculty and staff.

In the lower right corner of the Desktop, next to the clock, you'll see the McAfee Shield in the taskbar next to the clock. Right click on this shield and choose "Virusscan Console" from the menu.

We recommend setting up two separate update tasks, depending on how you use your computer. One is a task set to check for updates once a day at a specific time. The other is to check for updates during login.

We recommend both to allow your McAfee virusScan to update itself regularly. If you leave your computer on all of the time, then the check during login isn't really needed. But if your computer is put to sleep, or turned off intermittently, it could miss the scheduled update time periodically, so setting McAfee to update during login will help to mitigate that potential problem.

To set up the task so it will update during login, pull down the Schedule Task box and choose "At Logon".

To schedule a daily update, set the time that you want the update to run. Under "Schedule Task", it should say "Daily" by default.

Click on OK to save the setting, then click on OK again to close the task properties.

If you turn your computer off or put it to sleep regularly, repeat the above process to add another automatic update task to check for updates during login.
