Official University Position:

  Unit websites should live within their home unit's website.  

Thus, a lab or study should be housed within the department or
center's existing website.

CLASnet is willing to request (and host) a so-called "third level
domain" for a unit if:

* The unit is a class 3 center (or larger).
* The unit searches/hires it's own faculty.
* The unit director specifically requests the domain from the CLAS
  Dean's Office.

Exceptions to the first two conditions may be made if the unit is
inter-college.  

While it is possible to bypass this and directly request the domain
from CNS, CLASnet will not host the domain unless these three
conditions are met.  I mention this because we've had more than one
over-anxious director do this and find themselves with a domain and no
one to host it.
