For quite some time Macintosh computers on the CLAS network have needed to use BOOTP for internet access rather than the more common DHCP protocol. There were a variety of reasons for using BOOTP but, after the recent upgrades to the CLAS DHCP system, it is no longer necessary for Macs to do this. With a few very simple changes you can have your Mac access the internet using the new DHCP system. The whole process of switching from BOOTP to DHCP will only take 5 or 6 clicks from start to finish.

First, make sure your computer has been turned on and you're at the desktop. Once the Mac is ready, follow the directions below for the version of MacOS running on your computer.

Steps for switching from BOOTP to DHCP

MacOS X:

  1. Go to System Preferences under the Apple Menu or click the light switch icon in the dock.
  2. Once the System Preferences are up, click on the Network icon.
  3. Make sure the "Show" dropdown menu is set to "Built-in Ethernet".
  4. Under the TCP/IP tab, choose to "Configure Using DHCP".
  5. Click the "Apply Now" button in the lower right.

Classic MacOS (9 and earlier):

  1. Go to the TCP/IP control panel under the Apple Menu.
  2. Make sure the "Connect via" dropdown menu is set to "Ethernet".
  3. Choose "Configure Using DHCP Server".
  4. Click on the close box in the upper left of the window and choose Save in the dialogue box that pops up.

That's it! You should now have functional internet access again.
