CLAS provides departmental mailing lists to the units for which we provide email.
faculty@dept.ufl.edu For the unit's faculty.
staff@dept.ufl.edu For the unit's staff.
grads@dept.ufl.edu For the units graduate students.

As an example, the mailing list faculty@rll.ufl.edu would be a list of all the faculty members in the department of Romance Languages & Literature.

All of our departments should have these three lists. However, it is up to the "list owner" to keep the lists "up to date" regarding any emails that aren't hosted by the CLAS email server. In many cases, this is another role for the department's computer contact. When the contact submits a New User Request or an Account Deletion Request, we will automatically add or remove the email address from the appropriate email list. However, if the user is/was subscribed to multiple mailing lists (not just the user's primary affiliation), or the mailing list has another (non-CLAS) address subscribed to the list, then it will be up to the list owner to manage these additional subscriptions.

All of the daily list administration tasks can be handled via the Majordomo mail software package. The list owner is supplied with the list password(s) for all three lists. All of the list maintenance commands will be sent (via email) to majordomo@clas.ufl.edu.

Other Aliases

As per request, we also have email aliases for:
chair@dept.ufl.edu The unit's chair or director
www@dept.ufl.edu The unit's webpage maintainer

As these aliases don't change very often, they are not under Majordomo administration. The department contact will need to email us with any changes to these aliases.

Maintaining the Departmental Mailing Lists

As the list owner, you will send email to the Majordomo email robot to maintain the list, using the list (not your account) password. Only the person designated as list master can make changes to the list. Mailing List Names

Majordomo uses your department's email "domain" to name the mailing lists. For example, the Department of Romance Languages and Literature would have mailing lists named faculty-rll, staff-rll, and students-rll.

Finding out who's on the lists

To see the faculty list for a department, send a message to majordomo@clas.ufl.edu, with this in the body of the message:

	who list-name
	end

The "list-name" is the name of the mailing list you're interested in, as described above. Majordomo doesn't understand email signatures: you can either turn yours off when you send the message , or put the word end as above on the line after the last command--that tells Majordomo to stop processing. (To turn off signatures in Eudora--just click on the JH {John Hancock} button and set it to None.)

Majordomo will email back a list of all the email addresses on that list within a couple minutes.

Changing the list password

When the list was created, the unit's list owner was given the password. If you are a new list owner, and you don't have the password, please contact us, and we will either tell you or reset it, as per your preference.

To change a known password, use the passwd command:

	passwd list-name old-password new-password
	end

"list-name" is the name of the list, old-password is the current list password, and new-password is what you'd like it changed to.

Adding a person to a list

To add a name to a list, send a subscribe command to majordomo@clas.ufl.edu:

        approve password subscribe list-name email-address

Where password is the list password described above. You can put multiple subscribe commands in a single message.

Removing a person from a list

To remove a person from a list, use the unsubscribe command:

        approve password unsubscribe list-name email-address

More information on Majordomo

If you send the command help to majordomo@clas.ufl.edu, you'll receive a list of "subscriber" commands. We also have a more expansive list available. Please note that the lists command, described in the Majordomo help, will not display the names of the departmental mailing lists. This is by design.
