CLASnet

Privacy Policy

This document applies to faculty, staff, students, and other personnel associated with the University of Florida. Our Internet visitors should visit the University of Florida Internet Privacy Policy.

CLASnet uses a policy of "informed consent" when using your information. You should understand how CLASnet uses the information you provide, and your right to approve the use of that information.

While using CLASnet, you may be required to provide various information (name, UFID number, email address, departmental affiliation, and other contact information). This information will only be available to CLASnet (a division of the UF CLAS Dean's Office) and other UF IT organizations for daily administrative duties and to communicate with you. The information will not be redistributed to other agencies without notification.

Network Traffic

CLASnet does not monitor the contents of traffic crossing the network. However, CLASnet may monitor the volume and type of traffic, in order to provide better service to our departments. UF IT Security may monitor the content of traffic entering/leaving UF to identify compromised hosts to prevent the spread of Internet-based trojans or other malware.

CLASnet reserves the right to remove any machine or user from the CLAS network if we suspect the user/machine negatively affects the security or available network bandwidth of our other machines and/or users.

Electronic Mail

All electronic messages stored on UF-owned computers may be considered UF intellectual property.

CLASnet does not monitor on a regular basis the contents of incoming or outgoing electronic messages. CLASnet may monitor the volume and type of messages in order to provide better service to our departments. We normally do not examine the contents of any messages stored on the CLASnet servers. However, we may monitor the size of the messages stored, in order to prevent system DoS (Denial of Service) attack and/or recognize a mis-configured client computer.

If a user contacts CLASnet noting a problem with email, we may examine the message headers in order to trace the problem. We will not examine the messages' contents unless explicitly requested by the user or a competent authority.

File Storage

All electronic documents stored on UF-owned computers may be considered UF intellectual property.

CLASnet normally does not monitor the contents of user files stored on the CLASnet servers. CLASnet may monitor the volume and type of files in order to provide better service to our departments, particularly if a unit is low on disk resources.

In the event of a system intrusion (aka "break-in"), we may be required to examine files that meet the attacker's modus operandi. This includes suspiciously-named files, files created immediately following the intrusion, etc.

CLASnet disk storage may be examined for content upon instruction by a competent administrative authority. Such examination will occur only on suspicion of materials forbidden by the CLAS and/or UF AUP.

File Archival

CLASnet systems will archive files stored on the CLASnet disk(s) as part of our normal operations. These archives are stored off-site, and are available only to UF IT staff.

Termination of account

In the event that you close your account(s) with CLASnet, all of your personal information and files will be removed from the system. All files stored on the SHARE volume(s) of the server(s) may remain, and their ownership may be transferred to your supervisor or successor.

If requested by the departmental contact, CLASnet may transfer files from your HOME volume to your supervisor or successor. If you object, it is your responsiblity to contact your chair or director, and/or the CLAS Dean's Office before the termination of your account.

You agree to use information contained on theCLASnet site only for legal purposes.
